Science
If you visit the sixth grade science class this year, you will find lots of activity! The year begins with the study of insects, spiders and other arthropods. An insectarium full of insects brought in by students is the result of many sightings of interest in the fall. Work continues as each student plans an experiment which will be carried out and presented at our Science Fair in
March. Other topics studied include invertebrates, plants, classification, the cell, creationism and an introduction to physical science. Each sixth grade class will dissect a starfish this year. A trip is planned to Prince William Park in the spring.
Seventh graders begin the year studying astronomy. Then as part of a physical science unit they study solids in motion, fluids, heat, magnetism and electricity. A unit on birds combines the physics of flight with biology. Trips are planned to the Science Museum in Richmond and North Anna Nuclear Power Plant in Louis County, Va.
Eighth grade science is studying astronomy, weather, geology and oceanography throughout the year. The astronomy unit is a big unit where eighth grade not only studies the earth but the solar system too. This unit will involve a research paper on a heavenly system of their choice. An eighth grader you can choose to take this class for high school credit. This means the student has to take a few more tests and do extra work on projects, but it's well worth earning that credit before you enter high school. A special event in the spring will be a trip to the beach for hands-on oceanography and fun for the eighth grade spring retreat. If you like science you would love this class.
